Featuring Greg Zimprich and Paul Maccabee

Would you be happiest working in PR at a corporation such as 3M, Best Buy, Target or . . . . Medtronic? Or would your perfect career be at a Twin Cities PR agency like Padilla, Tunheim, Carmichael Lynch Relate, Lola Red. . . or Maccabee?

Paul Maccabee (career-long PR agency pro with Mona Meyer McGrath & Gavin – now Weber Shandwick-Minneapolis, Kamstra Communications, Minda Associates and his own agency Maccabee) and finance communications director Greg Zimprich, a veteran of both PR agencies (Weber Shandwick, Kohnstamm, Miller Meester) and corporations (Honeywell, General Mills and now Medtronic) will lead a lively debate about the joys and perils of a PR career at an agency versus a client-side job.

What are corporations looking for when they hire? What are PR agencies seeking? Which side of the PR table pays more, is better for work-family balance, is more stable during a time of volatility and layoffs? Most importantly, what attributes and skills make you an attractive candidate for a PR agency? Or, what makes you an irresistible PR hire for a corporation? Come prepared to eat a fabulous breakfast (there will be chocolate pastries) and ask hard questions – of yourself, and of Greg and Paul!

Gregory J. Zimprich, APR, Fellow PRSA
Greg Zimprich currently serves as Director of Finance Communications at Medtronic, where he is responsible for driving communications across the global Finance function as well as understanding of critical Finance initiatives across the total enterprise. He also serves as a member of the Finance Executive Committee (FEC).

Previously, Greg served as Director of Global Business Communications for Honeywell’s Home and Building Technologies group. His 30-year career includes experience on both the agency and corporate side, including nearly 20 years with General Mills in senior communication roles. Greg served as Director of Brand Public Relations at General Mills from 2005 to 2012, where he led a nationally recognized team that managed PR and social media efforts for the company’s 100-plus brands, including beloved household products like Wheaties, Cheerios, Pillsbury, Betty Crocker, and Yoplait.

His agency experience includes leadership roles with Miller Meester, Weber Shandwick and Kohnstamm Communications. He also currently serves as an adjunct professor at Metropolitan State University.

Greg received his undergraduate degree in psychology and public relations from Saint Mary’s University, and holds a master’s degree in mass communications from Marquette University. He’s an active member of the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) and currently serves as President-Elect for the Minnesota PRSA Chapter.

Paul co-founded the Maccabee agency – hailed as “PR Firm of the Year” by Twin Cities Business Monthly and a five-time winner of “Best Companies To Work For” -- 21 years ago, after cutting his teeth at Mona Meyer McGrath & Gavin (now Weber Shandwick-Minneapolis). Maccabee helped OfficeMax unveil the World’s Largest Rubberband Ball, carved then-Gov. Jesse Ventura out of 5,000 pounds of Kemps Ice Cream, employed America’s #1 Groucho Marx impersonator for Malt-O-Meal, hired Pet Psychics to “read the minds” of cats and dogs for PETCO stores, worked with sex expert Dr. Ruth Westheimer on American Medical Systems’ “Keeping Sexuality Alive” program, worked with actor Jeff Bridges on a “Rewind To End Hunger” cause marketing campaign, and launched Hazelden’s pioneering “Four Generations Overcoming Addiction” initiative. He won the Chicago Publicity Club’s “Creativity Award” for his Kemps “Sound of Moosic/Born To Moo” contest, which encouraged singers to moo popular music like cows.
