Ethics Matters: Exploring the Intersection of Business Perspectives

Every day we seem to hear a new startling fact or news story related to ethics and ethical violations. In the public relations world, it’s easy to forget that ethics is not limited to the communications function. Ethics within an organization is a living organism within all the functional areas. From communications to legal, human resources or corporate management – each area has its own ethical concerns and perspectives on any given situation. Where these ethical concerns intersect is an opportunity for dialogue and discussion.

Not only is ethics a team sport, responding to ethical challenges and dilemmas can be habit forming. This event will seek to help practitioners build “ethics muscle memory,” and carefully consider the impact of both big and small decisions.

This event will build on these concepts and bring together representatives from different parts of an organization to explore the topic of ethics. Panel members will share their perspectives and answer some of the most pressing ethical questions within today’s business environment.

Margaret Ann Hennen, APR, Fellow PRSA, Minnesota PRSA Ethics Officer
Margaret Ann is a communication/public relations professional with 30 years experience in Minnesota’s business communities. Her experience includes in-house counsel for Fortune 500 companies, a large community and academic healthcare provider, and public media.

In addition, her consulting clients include a Fortune 500 company, life and healthcare insurance companies, nonprofit organizations, small manufacturers and mid-size businesses. She has a history of delivering desired results for corporate and community organizations.

An organized and strategic leader with a reputation for motivating individuals and groups, Margaret Ann helps seemingly unrelated entities find common ground and aligns employees, customers and programs to business goals, helping to achieve strategic results.

She holds a BS and MA from St. Cloud State University and an MBC certificate in public relations from University of St. Thomas, is accredited by the Public Relations Society of America and a member of its prestigious College of Fellows.


Nancy Lyons 

Nancy Lyons is a CEO, entrepreneur, and all around good human who speaks about the intersection of leadership, entrepreneurialism, technology, and people. Through her candid writing and speaking, she explores the many facets of life at work and champions human-centered approaches to business. Seeing work and the culture of work as the next economic frontier, she pushes the progressive boundaries of how we think about professional and personal lives. Nancy has been locally and nationally recognized for her role as owner and CEO of Clockwork. She is co-author of “Interactive Project Management: Pixels, People, and Process” (New Riders, 2012) and author of the upcoming book, “How to Win at Business by Being Nice to Humans.”

Carrie Patton

Carrie holds a Bachelor of Science degree in psychology from Bemidji State University and is a Society of Human Resources Management Senior Certified Professional (SHRM-SCP) and Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) from the Human Resources Certification Institutes. She is also holds a Master’s Certificate in Project Management from The George Washington University School of Business. As the Vice President of Human Resources, for Cushman & Wakefield NorthMarq, Carrie Patton is responsible for delivering human resources management services to 700 employees by providing guidance and professional support to employees in areas of employee relations, performance management, training/development, compensation, employee benefits and legal compliance. With a diverse background in human resources, Carrie originally joined the Cushman & Wakefield NorthMarq’s predecessor, United Properties, human resources team in 2001 and has over 20 years of experience in the profession. Carrie is an active member of the Twin Cities Society of Human Resources Management (TCSHRM) and the Society of Human Resources Management (SHRM). Carrie currently sits on the Board of Directors of TCSHRM at the President of the organization. 

Ben Saukko, APR
Ben Saukko, APR, is the Director of Communications at AmeriPride Services, one the largest textile rental and supply companies in North America. For more than 20 years, he has been providing corporate communications, marketing and public relations counsel and leadership to Fortune 500 companies, nonprofits, educational institutions and government agencies. In his current role, he works closely with senior executives, legal, HR and other functional areas to develop strategy and execute internal and external communications programs across the organization. Prior to his this position, Ben worked for various corporations and agencies, including Weber Shandwick Worldwide. He has a bachelors’ degree in Mass Communications from the University of Minnesota and an MBA from the University of St. Thomas. He has been an active member of PRSA throughout his career and has served on and chaired several committees. He is also involved with many local and national non-profit organizations, including the Greater Twin Cities United Way, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and the TCIRA RangerSpiel.

Matthew Stump
Matt Stump is a lawyer in the 3M law department. Matt joined 3M in 2010 as division counsel, where he advises business units within the Health Care Business Group. Before joining 3M, Matt was an associate in the Intellectual Property Litigation group at Faegre Baker Daniels in Minneapolis. Earlier in his legal career he clerked for a federal judge in Birmingham, Alabama. Matt is a graduate of the University of Notre Dame and Harvard Law School, and he served as a U.S. Army infantry officer for four years between college and law school.
