Minnesota PRSA is pleased to welcome two new professionals into the ranks of accredited chapter members. Kelly Isackson, M.A. and Kent Kaiser, Ph.D., MAT, MLS recently passed their reviews and examinations, and may now add “APR” to their credentials. They will be recognized at upcoming Minnesota PRSA events.

With Isackson and Kaiser, approximately 90 Minnesota PRSA Chapter members hold the APR designation, the recognized gold standard for public relations practitioners since 1964.

During a rigorous process, Kaiser and Isackson demonstrated competency in the knowledge, skills and abilities required to practice strategic public relations in today’s business arena. Among requirements, the assessment involves presenting a communications plan before a panel of active APRs and sitting for a three-hour exam covering ethics, law, communications theory, and best practices in a variety of real-world scenarios.

Applicants must be seasoned working professionals with substantial public relations experience. Once accredited, APRs are required to remain committed to high ethical standards, complete continuing education, and serve in volunteer or leadership activities within the profession.

Isackson works in the public affairs/internal communications division of State Farm Insurance, Mendota Heights, Minn. Previously, she was communications and marketing consultant at Fairview Pharmacy Services, and electronic communications coordinator at the Wisconsin Dental Association, where she served earlier as a public relations intern. Isackson is a graduate of Concordia College, Moorhead, Minn, and holds a master’s degree in Communication Studies from Marquette University, Milwaukee, Wisc.

Kaiser is Associate Professor and Chair of the Communications Department at the University of Northwestern-St. Paul and Adjunct Instructor in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Minnesota. He holds a Ph.D. in Mass Communication from the University of Minnesota and has been a Fellow at the Humphrey Institute Policy Forum. Kaiser has a Masters in Liberal Studies from the University of Minnesota Duluth, a Master of Arts in Teaching in History from Smith

College, Northampton, Mass., and a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from Carleton College, Northfield, Minn. With special interests in public policy communication and sports media, he has been active in numerous professional associations, including the Organization for the Study of Language, Communication, and Gender; the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication; the North American Society in the Sociology of Sport; and the Minnesota Association of Government Communicators, where he has earned multiple awards.
