By Joan O’Fallon, APR, Minnesota PRSA Accreditation Committee
This week, we congratulate Patrick Strait, APR, as part of our series highlighting our newest
Strait earned his Accreditation in Public Relations (APR) in February. Strait is a senior communications consultant for HealthPartners, where he is responsible for media relations, the annual meeting and communications for internal and external audiences.
For his APR panel, Strait presented his campaign to reduce sugary beverages on HealthPartners campuses, including TRIA Orthopaedics and the corporate headquarters in Bloomington.
Prior to his work for HealthPartners, Strait was the marketing communications and public relations manager for Snap Fitness. Strait holds a bachelor’s degree in integrative public relations from Central Michigan University in Mount Pleasant.
I recently interviewed Strait about achieving his APR and he had this to say about the experience:
O’Fallon: What motivated you to pursue your APR?

Strait: There are two main reasons. First, with the constantly changing climate of communications and public relations, APR has grown and evolved with the times. As a 14-year PR pro, the idea of pursuing an accreditation that is both prestigious and relevant was a clear choice in terms of how to continue my career. Second, I currently work in health care public relations, and letters after one's name matter.

O’Fallon: What is the biggest benefit you found in achieving your APR?
Strait: It's so easy to get caught up in the situation of the day in our industry, that occasionally we lose sight of things like creating SMART objectives and setting long-term goals for success. By achieving my APR, I am able to be a more thorough and "planful” PR pro.

O’Fallon: What advice or tip do you have for others considering their APR?
Strait: Listen to your mentors; they know what they're talking about.
Congratulations, Patrick! Minnesota PRSA is fortunate to have you as a member who has achieved accreditation to strengthen not only your work in public relations, but also the profession of public relations.
Accreditation in Public Relations is the gold standard in our profession. It signifies that a practitioner has mastered the strategic aspects of public relations, as well as tactics, and has the knowledge, skills and abilities to practice at a leadership level.  Accreditation provides a competitive edge in the job market and prepares you to counsel senior executives. APRs earn a place at the table and higher lifetime incomes.
