Sara Gavin has spent the bulk of her career at Weber Shandwick where, as President of Weber Shandwick | North America, she currently oversees the 23 offices that comprise the company’s network across the United States and Canada. Gavin began her rise in public relations partnering in a firm, Mona Meyer McGrath & Gavin. She has been named among the “40 under 40” and “Minnesota’s 25 Most Innovative Women” by Minneapolis-St. Paul Business Journal and was cited with the Career Achievement award by that same publication in 2015. While working across an array of different clients, Gavin has gained a variety of knowledge, which she finds to be an asset in her career.

Sara will be sitting down with Minnesota PRSA as part of our Women in Leadership panel during our summer Coffee with a Legend series. We recently caught up with her for a sneak peak at what we can learn.

What honor or achievement makes you most proud?

Sara feels privileged to have been a partner in starting an agency early in her career. “There’s a certain deeply personal commitment to the work that comes from having your name on the door and I think I’ve carried that with me ever since.” She’s proud of what she accomplished at that agency and now thrives on having a leadership role in a global firm.

Any mentors or role models who have influenced you?

“From colleagues at Weber Shandwick, including the partners Mona Meyer McGrath & Gavin, and some remarkable clients, I have so often been surrounded by talented professionals and amazing people.”

What common mistakes do you witness in the professional world?

Distraction and lack of focus. We are constantly bombarded with complexities; listening skills are at a premium. It’s important to prioritize and stay focused.

Do you follow any routines to help you get through the day?

The first hour of the day can set the tone. Gavin strives to wake early enough to have materially quiet time to read newsfeeds without distraction. As the day progresses, not getting tied to the computer. Connecting with people is energizing.

Any goals for the future?

Continue to learn. Be open to exploring new ways of doing things. In Gavin’s professional role, she wants to keep Weber Shandwick at the forefront, pushing the firm forward.  Find joy in work well done and other’s work well done.
