Diversity & Inclusion

The Minnesota chapter is dedicated to providing a welcoming environment to all PR and communication professionals. In 2018, the membership voted to add a Diversity and Inclusion Officer (DIO) to its board. Long-time member Marsha Pitts-Phillips agreed to serve as DIO for a two-year term. In this role, Marsha leads diversity and inclusion (D&I) efforts for the chapter including an annual half-day D&I forum.

The DIO will also:

  • Provide stewardship in aligning the chapter with the national PRSA standards and best practices for D&I;
  • Oversee the chapter’s D&I education, and lead efforts to incorporate D&I into the fabric of the chapter;
  • Serve as an advisor to the board on matters related to D&I; and
  • Work with members to increase visibility of D&I standards, resources, and best practices for the following dimensions of diversity at all levels of the organization – racial, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, gender, culture, skills, and mindset.

1st Annual Diversity & Inclusion Forum

On November 5, 2019, Minnesota PRSA held its first annual Diversity and Inclusion Forum at the Medtronic Headquarters in Fridley, Minnesota. The Forum featured a special "Conversations with Chanda" live event podcast by The Minneapolis Foundation's Chanda Smith Baker, Senior Vice President of Impact. Chanda explored the importance of including different voices in stories with the panel, which featured Lindsey Seavert and Dirk Tedmon, who shared the journey of making the award-winning documentary, "Love them First: Lessons from Lucy Laney Elementary".

Minnesota PRSA is grateful for the support of Forum sponsors Medtronic, The Minneapolis Foundation's "Conversations with Chanda", and Captivate Media.
