Julie Batliner, President of Spong, a leading public relations firm in Minneapolis, has earned her Accreditation in Public Relations from the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA). The certification, which signifies mastery of strategic PR practice, is offered by PRSA and eight other professional communication organizations that comprise the Universal Accreditation Board. The designation was announced yesterday by the Minnesota chapter of PRSA.

In earning accreditation—which permits use of the “APR” credential after her name—Batliner has proven competence in 60 areas of knowledge, skills, and abilities associated with the public relations profession. The rigorous assessment process includes presenting a work portfolio to a panel of three peers and sitting for an extensive computer-based examination. Professionals earning the APR must maintain their credential through continuing professional development, providing leadership to the profession, and serving their local communities.

“Earning the APR reflects a mastery of the knowledge, skills and abilities needed to succeed in our increasingly complex profession,” said Elizabeth S. McMillan, APR, 2016 chair of the Universal Accreditation Board. “Practitioners who achieve the designation are demonstrating their commitment not only to our profession, but also to a strong code of ethics and to the betterment of their organizations and clients.”

“It’s important to me that I never stop learning, and the APR is a great way to demonstrate expertise and best practices in all aspects of the industry,” said Batliner. “I like to lead by example and encourage my team to continue to gain expertise and skills for leading the public relations function, strategic planning process, crisis and issues management, public affairs, social engagement, applying ethics and law and understanding communications models.”

Batliner was named president of Spong in 2015 after 10 years serving as the agency’s managing director and lead client relationship manager. She joined Spong following seven years at FleishmanHillard and roles in two other agencies. Batliner’s industry awards include PRSA Silver Anvils, SABREs, and PRSA Classics on behalf of prestigious brands. She has been a finalist for Account Director of the Year from PR News; has been named one of Forty Under 40 by both PR Week and the Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal, and recently received Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal’s 2016 Top Women in Business award. Active in the Twin Cities community, Batliner is a board officer of Meet Minneapolis. She is also a frequent panelist and expert commentator on changes in the PR industry.
